, when i think about the obama campaign, ohio says we know we're going to win it. when i speak to republicans they say absolutely we're going antoine it. there's a lot more enthusiasm for mitt romney than there's been before. who am i to believe? >> nobody. i think the one thing that is true about ohio is that it's atypical in the sense that the president is doing badly amongst white men and white working-class men in particular around the country. although romney has been eroding the slight advantage here in ohio with white working class men, what helps the president here is that bailout of the auto industry because that is helping him with his key demographics. so if it really in the end is about ohio and the 18 votes here, then it may be that something has distorted the race here and helped the president. but nobody yet really even dares to call it. the one thing that both sides are saying very clearly is that early voting is very important. a quarter of the state has already voted and half may have vote bid polling day itself. traditionally early voting is the democrats, bu

, lester. it is really no surprise that president obama is kicking off the weekend here in ohio. this state is really key to his midwest firewall. if mitt romney doesn't win ohio, it is very unlikely that he will hold on to the presidency. according to our latest nbc news "wall street journal" marist poll, president obama has an honest lead here in ohio. let's take a look at the latest numbers. according to our poll, president obama has a six-point lead in the buckeye state, which is unchanged from last month. he's gotten high marks after hurricane sandy with seven in ten voters approving of his handling of the storm and he has a slight edge when it comes to handling the economy. 48% say mr. obama would do a better job compared to 46% who side with romney. on friday, mr. obama made a three-stop blitz here in ohio, staking his closing argument on the auto bailout, which is widely popular here. and which republicans oppose. he also slammed romney for claiming that jeep is shipping jobs to china. it's a claim the romney campaign defends that has been widely discredited. take a listen to what p

that we're in a tie. the swing state data showing ever so slight obama lead, within the margin of error. ohio couple points up. through the midwest, wisconsin, michigan, minnesota, a couple points up, a couple points up in pennsylvania. ever so slight obama lead there. but it could go either way. martha: monica? >> yeah. what is interesting we're seeing the traditional tightening of a race as we get closer and closer to election day. what is interesting that independent number you put you, martha, governor romney still has a very healthy lead among independents and doug mentioned the swing states, when you look at critical swing states states of ohio, governor romney is leading among independents by six points n virginia he is leading among independents by a staggering 21 points among independents. also in florida he is leading by about five points. races are won in the middle. those independents will really decide this race and they seem to be trending toward governor romney. martha: let's look at some of these other numbers. i was fascinated by these when they came out in the evening
